Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most researched and widely used therapeutic approaches today. It’s based on the idea that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are deeply connected and constantly influencing each other.

For example, you might have a thought like, "This therapy could really help me, but it feels a bit strange." That thought creates emotions: maybe excitement mixed with some discomfort. Those feelings lead to actions, such as calling a therapist to schedule a session - or not.

In CBT, the therapist helps you become aware of this process, teaching you how to change your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in ways that align with your goals. CBT is particularly effective for conditions like depression and anxiety, helping you break free from negative cycles and make lasting positive changes.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment, experiencing it fully in body and mind, with a non-judgmental and accepting attitude. By learning mindfulness, we can better manage stress, anxiety, and depression, as it helps us experience events in a more detached, less reactive way.

Rooted in Vipassana meditation from ancient India, mindfulness encourages seeing things as they truly are - without judgment or resistance.

At Thrive, your counselor may incorporate mindfulness in various ways to help you stay calm during overwhelming moments or accept thoughts, emotions, and sensations that you can't control. We also use mindfulness-based approaches like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support your growth.

Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care is a framework, not a specific technique. It ensures that a counselor understands and responds appropriately to the needs of someone who has experienced trauma, helping them heal in a safe and supportive environment.

At Thrive, we believe that trauma survivors can also experience post-traumatic growth. One of the techniques we use is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and we have multiple counselors trained in this approach to support healing from trauma.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements, tapping, or audio) to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories. This technique doesn’t erase memories but helps change how we relate to them, so they no longer negatively affect us.

At Thrive, EMDR is used to assist with trauma, whether from a single event or ongoing experiences. It supports healing by prompting the brain to process memories more effectively.

EMDR requires trust and readiness, so it’s not something you'd start in your first session. Your therapist will assess your safety and readiness before beginning treatment.

Telehealth Sessions
Telehealth offers confidential counseling through secure video or audio sessions, making therapy accessible from anywhere. At Thrive, we use HIPAA-compliant platforms and ensure both you and your therapist are in private spaces to maintain confidentiality. While it may feel different at first, many find telehealth comfortable and effective, and our trained therapists are here to make the experience as smooth and supportive as possible.

What is Therapy Like at Thrive Counseling Services?

At Thrive, therapy is a personalized and collaborative experience. Our counselors tailor each session to meet your unique needs, whether you're dealing with panic attacks, struggling with substance use, or navigating relationship challenges. For example, you might learn practical skills for managing anxiety, explore the underlying causes of your behaviors, or work on identifying patterns that impact your relationships.

While certain aspects of therapy, like the initial assessment, are more structured, the overall direction is shaped by you. Together with your therapist, you’ll set goals and work toward solutions that are meaningful and relevant to your life. Our approach is flexible, supportive, and designed to help you move forward at your own pace.
